Just wrapped up the 3rd PanAfriCon AI 2024 at the newly inaugurated Adwa Museum in Addis Ababa! In my opening remarks, I emphasized that the future of colonization will not be fought on battlefields but waged in the digital realm. It’s imperative that Africa fights for its AI sovereignty to safeguard our data, innovations, and future.Hosting and moderating a panel with some of the brightest minds in AI was nothing short of inspiring. The energy and innovation showcased here reaffirmed my belief that Africa is not just participating in the AI revolution—we’re taking part in it.An insightful remark from H.E. Temesgen Tiruneh, Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia on Ethiopia’s determination for digital transformation. His emphasis for embracing emerging tech like AI to drive socioeconomic development resonated deeply with all of us.We were also honored by the welcome remarks from Dr. Worku Gachena, Director General of the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute. He spoke passionately about the remarkable achievements of this young but impactful institution and the immense potential of the conference the Institute organized. It’s inspiring to see how much this Institute has accomplished in such a short time, positioning Ethiopia—and Africa—as a hub for AI innovation.During the panel I led titled “The Case for a Pan African AI Institute,” Taye Girma, PhD, Deputy Director General of the Ethiopian AI Institute, shared powerful insights on the necessity of a unified approach to AI development across the continent. His perspectives on collaboration and capacity-building were truly thought-provoking.A big thank you to Jean Maillard from Meta, Dagi B. from Salesforce, Dr. Abdoulaye from UNESCO, and Barbara Glover from AUDA-NEPAD for their invaluable contributions to their presentation and our panel discussions.
